feature: Tackling drugs, changing lives
27 June 2008
Tackling drugs means dealing with drug crimes but also providing help for those who want to kick the habit.
Haringey Council and other agencies in the Safer Haringey Partnership took to the streets during National Tackling Drugs Week last month to give advice and distribute leaflets on where to turn for drugs help.
An information stall in the Mall shopping centre in Wood Green attracted a steady stream of shoppers throughout the day from all walks of life.
Cllr Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for enforcement and safer communities, dropped in to the stall during the day.
“The level of interest was really encouraging,” she said. “We had teachers, nurses, midwives, parents and friends taking away information and hopefully passing this on to people who need it.
“There are a lot of support agencies in the borough where people can get help for drug or alcohol problems. There is also support for family members and friends who are affected by drug or alcohol abuse.
Success stories
“We have had several success stories where people came for help when they were in crisis - having lost their job, home and sometimes their family. With a lot of determination, courage and support they have managed to stop using drugs or alcohol and have got their lives back on track.
“I would encourage everyone to use our freephone helpline (see below) which will direct people to the appropriate sources of help.”
Besides providing support for those with drug or alcohol problems, the council also works with police to tackle the crime and anti-social behaviour associated with drug dealing. So far 140 crack houses - properties where crack and other drugs are sold - have been closed and then re-let to families in housing need.
Cllr Canver added:
“Of course, besides supporting people with drug problems we want to ensure that those suffering from anti-social behaviour due to drugs contact us or the police for help.”
