feature: Tackling fraud

10 September 2008

Benefit fraud is a crime, and Haringey Council is working hard to stamp it out.

Part of this is an annual trawl checking the information we are given when claims are made – and cross-checking with other public agencies.

If there is any indication of possible fraud, we will investigate.

It’s a national exercise that uncovers pension, blue badge parking permit and tenancy fraud and other irregularities as well as benefit fraud.

“The vast majority of people are honest and only claim what they are entitled to, but there are others who try it on,” said Cllr Charles Adje, cabinet member for resources.

“They are not just cheating the system, but cheating the rest of us who pay our taxes.

“Our message is clear, that these people will be caught and made to pay.

“Anyone concerned about possible benefit fraud should let us know and we will investigate.”

Remember, if you are claiming benefits and your circumstances change you must let us know so that we can make sure you are receiving the correct money. Contact your nearest customer service centre or call the council on 0845 071 2800.

Fraud doesn’t pay

  • Two Tottenham men who claimed benefit without declaring their savings are now behind bars for six months.
  • A Wood Green woman who bought a house elsewhere and sublet her Haringey home while continuing to claim benefits is now paying back £58,000.
  • A Bounds Green woman who didn’t tell the council she had got a full-time job is now seeing her wages going towards paying back £21,000 on top of 140 hours community service.
