feature: Summer University 2008 Programme launches

28 May 2008

A fantastic choice of activities for young people and the opportunity to learn new skills during the summer holidays is on offer as the Summer University programme returns for the second year.

“The Summer University Programme was a great success last year, so I’m delighted it is back for a second year,”

said Cllr Liz Santry, cabinet member for children and young people.

Last year Haringey had the second highest number of courses on offer for 13 to 19 year olds (extending to 25 year olds in the case of young people with disabilities) out of the 18 London boroughs taking part.

For Haringey young people one of the highlights last year was the Summer Uni London Annual Festival of Sport held in Tower Hamlets.

Teams from the 18 London boroughs took part in friendly tournaments including five-a-side football, basketball, badminton and athletics.

And a range of taster workshops in dance, cheerleading, archery, martial arts and rowing were also offered to encourage young people to try new physical activities and boost their interest in sport.

A grand total of 76 young people from the borough brought back more than 50 gold, silver and bronze medals, and Haringey won the Festival of Sport Cup for the Best Summer Uni Team.

Sport is just part of the programme though. There are courses on everything from philosophy to music production. Summer Uni London believes that “every young person in London should be able to access courses and activities that boost their confidence, inspire them to learn and equip them to find employment”.

It’s now a proven and successful model for engaging young people outside school hours, and raising their aspirations.

The Summer Uni is now operating across London offering varied programmes during holiday periods that are educational or vocational and, importantly, fun and dynamic.

This year’s Summer Uni runs from 28 July to 29 August 2008.

Summer Uni London is also listing all activities available to young people across London, in particular free and affordable courses and volunteering opportunities.
