4 January 2008
The achievements of sporting stars from across Haringey were officially recognised when Haringey Council staged its first ever sports “Oscars”.
Clubs, athletes, volunteers and coaches were rewarded for their sporting successes and commitment over the past 12 months at the Celebrating Sport Awards at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.
Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Sheik Thomson, presented awards for ten categories at the event, compered by Richard Sumray, who as former chief executive of London International Sport started London’s bid for the 2012 Olympic Games.
The council aims to make the awards an annual event as part of a wider drive to encourage sporting excellence in the run up to the 2012 Games.
The event also saw four young people presented with new sports scholarships, through which Haringey offers up to £1,500 funding, along with coaching advice and pastoral support, to help young athletes fulfil their potential.
Cabinet member for leisure, culture and lifelong learning, Cllr Dhiren Basu, said: “Haringey has a proud tradition of producing some of Britain’s outstanding sportspeople. We are determined to ensure that Haringey remains on the sporting map, particularly in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games.
“The new Celebrating Sports Awards will play a really important role in encouraging our best performing sports people to continue to develop their skills, our best coaches to continue to hone those talents, and our volunteers to continue to offer sporting pportunities for more people around Haringey.”
