feature: Recycling around the block

14 October 2008

We are about to extend our recycling services to every housing estate in the borough.

Recycling is about to become easier than ever before for thousands of residents.

We are introducing on-site facilities in dozens more housing estates, enabling residents to recycle a wide range of materials easily and conveniently.

And you won’t have to separate your newspapers from your cardboard, or your empty tins from your plastic bottles.

All you have to do is place all of your recyclable items in one single bin - located by the entrance doors to your block or by your bin storage area - and they will be separated later in the recycling process.

A leaflet will be delivered through your door explaining how you can use the new service once the bins are installed.

The improvements mean that every housing estate will now receive mixed material recycling collections, following a successful trial by Haringey Council at several estates in Tottenham since 2006.

The efforts of residents in these trial estates played a major role in helping the borough’s recycling rate increase from 19 per cent in 2006 to more than 25 per cent in 2007-08.

The council now hopes that extending the service to every estate in the borough will help that rate soar to 30 per cent and beyond.

Cabinet member for environment and conservation Cllr Brian Haley said:

“We’ve made massive strides as a borough when it comes to recycling, and I’d like to thank all those residents who’ve made recycling part of their daily routine.

“But we know there’s still more work to do to make recycling easier for all of our residents, as we try to cut the amount of rubbish being thrown away unnecessarily in Haringey.

“I hope the rollout of our estates recycling service will encourage even more people to recycle on a regular basis, and help us in our aim to become the greenest borough in London.”

Earlier this year the council introduced its mixed recycling service to 20,000 more homes able to receive a doorstep collection, bringing the total number of properties receiving the service to almost 70,000.

What can I recycle?

Besides your regular recycling service, you can also take your unwanted goods to Haringey’s two Reuse and Recycle Centres.

The centres, in Hornsey High Street (opposite Greig City Academy) and Park View Road, Tottenham, are open 8.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 4pm at weekends.

Alternatively, you can order free collections from your front garden for a range of items, including white goods like fridges, ovens and cookers, TVs and IT equipment.

There is a charge of £16.84 for other items such as furniture. To arrange a collection call Haringey Enterprise on 020 8885 7700, or apply for a bulky item collection online.
