feature: On the hunt for green champions

17 March 2008

If you know someone who’s gone the extra mile to improve Haringey’s environment over the past 12 months, now’s the time to put them forward for official recognition at this year’s Better Haringey Awards.

It could be an individual who’s taken steps to cut energy at home, a school that’s encouraged all of its pupils to recycle, or a business that’s leading the way on reducing waste.

There are six awards up for grabs this year: Sustainable School, Greenest Public Sector Office, Sustainable Streets, Greening Your Home, Sustainable Travel and Green Business.

To nominate, simply fill out the form below and return it to the address provided before Wednesday 30 April.

Alternatively, you can nominate online and find more information about the categories by visiting www.haringey.gov.uk/betterharingeyawards.

The annual awards, organised by Haringey Council, aim to recognise outstanding environmental achievements by people across the borough and encourage others to adopt greener practices and lifestyles.

For the second year running, the awards on Thursday 5 June will form part of a wider Better Haringey Green Fair weekend.

The weekend, which takes place at the front of Tottenham Town Hall, N15, will include a special environmental education day for local schoolchildren and the main fair itself, open to all residents, on Saturday 7 June.

Look out for more information on the Haringey website at www.haringey.gov.uk/betterharingeygreenfair and in future editions of Haringey People.

Cabinet member for environment and conservation Cllr Brian Haley said:

“We can’t achieve our ambition to become one of the greenest boroughs in London without the help of our residents, other organisations and businesses.

“The Better Haringey Awards are our chance to say thank you for all their efforts. I hope the awards and the wider Green Fair weekend will also spur on others to think of ways they too can help protect our environment.”
