feature: £9 million improvements hit the road
14 May 2008
A new multi-million pound programme has been launched by Haringey Council to improve roads, transport systems and streetlights across the borough.
This year the council will be spending more than £9 million on a range of schemes to make traveling around Haringey easier and safer for residents and visitors.
The new Highways Works Plan for 2008/9, funded by both the council and Transport for London, sets out proposals to replace hundreds of street light columns, resurface dozens of roads, and re-lay many pavements around the borough.
The funding, which could rise to £10 million and beyond through further grants and investment, also includes an extra £200,000 to repair potholes across Haringey over the coming months.
Meanwhile, as part of the council’s drive to tackle climate change at a local level, there will also be substantial money spent on encouraging people to travel by alternative transport to the car.
That includes improvements to cycle routes, increased cycle parking, schemes to improve the speed of bus services, and more money for school travel plans, aimed at making roads around schools safer and encouraging more children to walk or cycle to school.
Cabinet member for environment and conservation Cllr Brian Haley said:
“We want to ensure all of our residents can get around Haringey easily and safely, which is why we’re continuing to invest heavily in road and transport improvements around the borough.
|Back to top“I’m particularly pleased that Transport for London is supporting what we’re trying to achieve in Haringey. Their funding will help us in our drive to tackle climate change by encouraging more people to leave the car at home and get around by alternative transport.”
Hole lotta fixing going on
This year’s Highways Works Plan is the first in Haringey’s history to directly incorporate the views of residents.
The council will be spending an additional £200,000 on a pothole blitz after people gave potholes as their biggest highways priority in an On the Road to Improvement consultation carried out last summer.
The blitz will take place on a ward-by-ward basis, starting in those wards where the highest proportion of respondents gave potholes as a priority.
But the extra cash will also help the council make general repairs to more potholes more quickly.
