feature: New year, new deal for Haringey young people

4 January 2008

A new drive to encourage more young people in Haringey to take part in events and activities organised by the youth service has been launched.

The move comes on the back of an independent assessment which praised the major improvements which have been made to the service.

The service was given a “health check” to assess how it was shaping up.

The main findings were that the service had made “significant progress” in the last year, with a number of key improvements.

Among the initiatives for the new year are:

  • A texting service so that young people can be alerted to events and activities;
  • A celebration event for youth services in February;
  • The Connexions service – which offers information and advice to young people – being delivered through Haringey Council’s youth service.

Head of the youth service, Belinda Evans, said: “More young people in the borough are taking part in the events and activities which we are organising.

“We’re also putting a lot of effort into asking them what they want from the service and then making sure that we deliver it.

“Among the highlights of last year was the launch of a new website – YouthSpace – specifically aimed at young people in the borough. We also had a tremendous response to the competition giving them the chance to choose the name of our four main youth centres.

“We want to build on the progress we’ve been making in the coming weeks and months.”

Cllr Liz Santry, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “Major improvements have been made by our youth service.

“The youth service team is doing a good job in providing better services and activities for young people in Haringey.”
