feature: New Hornsey gallery boosts libraries' cultural offer

11 December 2007

Haringey now has a new art gallery, at Hornsey library in Crouch End. And it’s just part of a drive to bring more cultural opportunities to residents across the borough.

The new Hornsey library gallery opened for business last month, with a show by acclaimed photographer Gitl Wallerstein-Braun, from south Tottenham, and is currently showing works by Andrew Palmer.

Palmer studied at St Martin’s and the Royal College of Art, and has shown regularly in London and Cornwall. He now divides his time between Crouch End and Port Gaverne in north Cornwall, and his Hornsey library show is inspired by the sea, dramatically invoking the coastline vistas around his Cornish studio.

“It’s fantastic to have this new gallery,” he said. “There is a need in the area for somewhere to show a wide variety of work, so this is filling a real gap in the market.

“I exhibited at the library two years go. That was a very successful show, so when I heard the space was being refurbished I got straight back in touch.”

Other artists showing up to April next year include Jonathan O’Dea, Mark Entwisle, known for his Gabriel Garcia Marquez and P. G. Wodehouse book covers, abstract painter Lara Harwood, Criton Tomazos and Irene Georgiou.

There are regular exhibitions too at Bruce Castle museum in Tottenham, and Haringey libraries also feature regular author events, and host thriving book clubs for adults and younger readers.

Writers appearing recently included children’s favourite Jonny Zucker, poet Joan Michelson and biographer Anna Sebba.

Cllr Dhiren Basu, cabinet member for leisure, culture and lifelong learning, said:

“It really is books and more at Haringey libraries, with cultural events of all kinds.

“I’m delighted too that the council has been able to refurbish the Hornsey gallery. We have a great programme lined up, and I hope everyone will take a look.”
