feature: Learn with Haringey

4 January 2008

If your New Year’s resolution is to learn a new skill, look no further than Haringey Adult Learning Service.

With an exciting new range of courses on offer, Haringey Adult Learning Service (HALS) is more popular than ever before. More than a thousand learners enrolled in the autumn – and things have definitely moved on from the old image of evening classes.

Many courses now lead to recognised qualifications. Last year more than 600 HALS learners gained new qualifications helping them with job-hunting or career changes. Classes are held during the day and on Saturdays as well as in the evenings, and many of them are still free of charge.

Whatever course you are interested in, there is helpful, professional advice and support available from experienced staff, to help you reach your individual learning goal.

Haringey also provides special training for businesses, including national “train to gain” support for firms, apprenticeships for younger people, and a wide range of courses tailored to meet the individual needs of employers and their staff.

The two main HALS learning centres, at Wood Green central library and White Hart Lane by Woodside high school, both offer well-equipped modern facilities.

Courses are held in other venues too. This year Highgate library becomes the latest borough learning centre, and to celebrate there’s an introductory 20 per cent discount on all its courses.

There is also a 10 per cent discount on all other courses if you are a registered Haringey carer or a Haringey library member.

What's on offer

There are day, evening and Saturday courses available in everything from aromatherapy, business skills, bookkeeping, computing, counselling and creative writing to French, Spanish and yoga.

There’s reading, writing, maths and English for speakers of other languages, careers help, online learndirect” literacy, numeracy and computer courses, and targeted programmes for young people, including apprenticeships and “entry to employment”.

HALS can also help local public and private sector employers with training their staff.

"We want everyone in Haringey to fulfil their potential. These courses are a fantastic way to improve your skills and gain useful qualifications. I hope everyone will take a look at what is on offer." Cllr Dhiren Basu, cabinet member for leisure, culture and lifelong learning
