feature: Here to help you - Haringey Council's Deaf Service
5 February 2008
There are scores of people in Haringey who have hearing problems. Haringey People looks at the work of Haringey Council’s deaf service.
The service offers confidential one-to-one support and advice for Haringey residents aged 16 and over who are deaf or have a hearing impairment.
Staff use British Sign Language and are able to help with a range of issues including:
- Access to benefits and health services
- Help with housing
- Advice on education, training and jobs
Special information cards have also been produced by which users can request an interpreter to be arranged, for example when they are seeing a doctor.
The service is part of Haringey Council’s Supporting People initiative which aims to help a range of people be independent and support them in day-to-day activities which most people take for granted.
The service has run consultation events to get feedback from users about what’s on offer.
There is also a service user focus group. Surveys are also held to give as many people as possible an opportunity to have their say.
The service runs drop-in sessions twice a week at the Winkfield Resource Centre, 33 Winkfield Road, Wood Green, N22 5RP on Tuesdays from 12.30-3.30pm and on Thursdays from 9.30am-12.30pm.
The service works closely with the Renate Campbell Trust Deaf Job Club which is also based at the Winkfield Centre.
