feature: Green success

14 September 2007

As many as 1,500 residents braved the pouring rain to attend Haringey Council's first ever Green Fair weekend in late June.

It was a weekend when Haringey came together to reflect on its environmental achievements over the past 12 months and consider the challenges ahead.

The Green Fair weekend at Alexandra Palace Park saw nine groups, schools and individuals pick up gongs at the third ever Better Haringey Awards.

But the awards ceremony was just part of a much wider weekend to demonstrate action the council is taking to improve the environment, and to encourage residents to think about ways they can help.

During a special environmental education day children from schools across Haringey were taught about recycling, organic waste and Fair Trade, as well as being treated to theatre entertainment

with a green theme and the chance to try out a range of weird and wonderful bicycles.

Around 1,500 residents then braved the rain to attend the Green Fair itself on Saturday 30 June.

Information and advice on improving the environment was on hand from a range of stallholders, while the main marquee featured a range of musical and theatre performances, a talk by Brigit Strawbridge from the BBC series It’s Not Easy Being Green, and a special gardening workshop.

Cabinet member for environment and conservation Cllr Brian Haley said:

“It was fantastic to see so many people turn out at the Green Fair, despite it being one of the wettest days of the year.

“As a council we are committed to taking action to improve the local environment and ensure sustainability, but we need the support of the wider community if we are to fully succeed in making Haringey a greener, cleaner and safer borough.

“So it’s really pleasing that so many residents are showing such an appetite for making environmental improvements and tackling climate change. It was also great to see so much enthusiasm for green issues among the children on the educational day.”
