feature: For that special occasion

5 August 2008

Nowadays it’s not just marriages on offer at Haringey registrars’ service.

There are civil partnership ceremonies, naming ceremonies for a new addition to the family, and renewal of vows ceremonies.

And there are the popular citizenship ceremonies where new UK citizens are welcomed into the community.

In fact the team has now changed its name to the Haringey Registration and Citizenship Service, to cover all the services it now offers. There are new opening times as well. See below for details.

Citizenship ceremonies are held every Friday, with up to 30 new citizens at a time, from babies a few months old to the eldest so far, a great, great grandparent. New citizens are required to make an oath or affirmation of allegiance to the crown and a promise to be a good citizen, before receiving a certificate from the Mayor.

“We aim to make all our ceremonies relaxed and welcoming, and we work closely with the families involved so that they get exactly what they want,” says Superintendent Registrar Paula Hall. “They are often very moving occasions.”

Most ceremonies can be held either at the civic centre or at any of the council’s licensed venues for civil ceremonies, which include Alexandra Palace, Bruce Castle museum, Highgate School and Spurs’ White Hart Lane stadium.

The Registration and Citizenship service was one of the first parts of the council to take part in the WOW! scheme were customers are invited to nominate staff for excellent customer services.

Since then the team has collected a clutch of awards, with customer comments including:

“She was really lovely and friendly – nothing was too much trouble for her.”

“With a welcome smile and a sincere handshake he turned the occasion into a very memorable one indeed.”

See WOW! Awards page for details of the scheme.
