feature: Driving out domestic violence

4 January 2008

Haringey’s domestic violence campaigners have won a prestigious award for innovation and good practice from the Mayor of London.

At the annual Mayoral Awards ceremony in December, Cllr Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for enforcement and safer communities and Eve Featherstone, who leads the domestic violence team, were presented with their award for the Drive Out Domestic Violence Bus which tours Haringey during Peace Week every September.

Domestic violence accounts for 30 per cent of all violent crime in Haringey, with 3,310 incidents reported to police last year. Cllr Canver said: “It is wonderful to be rewarded for this work. We have a really dedicated team working to stop domestic violence in our borough. Everyone goes that extra mile to ensure that people who need them can access services and that those services are publicised in many languages.

“The bus is very successful as it takes the information to the high street and provides an opportunity for people to approach members of the team to get help or information. This award is a mark of our commitment to getting rid of domestic violence in our borough.”

The bus project is linked to Haringey’s Hearthstone Domestic Violence Project and provides advice and information to help anyone suffering domestic violence or their friends seeking advice on their behalf.

For information and help on domestic violence call the Hearthstone project on 020 8888 5362 (out of hours freephone 0800 023 2794). Remember, in an emergency always call 999.
