Tree recycling - Don’t dump this Christmas - Top Christmas recycling tips
You’ve made the effort to recycle through the year. You’ve sometimes left the car at home. You may even have shunned plane travel. But now it’s environmental crunch time.
Environmentalists suffer seasonal nightmares about piles of wrapping paper stuffed in black bags, millions of turkeys thrown in the bin, Christmas trees dumped in the street.
For everyone’s efforts throughout the year to lead a greener lifestyle can be undermined in just a few weeks in December and January. Cabinet member for environment and conservation Cllr Brian Haley said
“Christmas is a really busy period, so it’s very easy to forget the things you’d do at other times to help protect the environment.
|back to top“But this is by the far the most important time of year when it comes to waste. I would urge everyone to continue to recycle over the Christmas period, and if you’re not currently recycling, there’s no better time to start.”
Tree recycling
If you receive a garden waste collection, cut your tree into smaller pieces and place it in your garden waste sack or an untied bag next to your green box.
From Thursday 3 January until Monday 14 January people can take their Christmas trees to the following locations for them to be recycled:
- Finsbury Park Staff Yard, Endymion Road entrance, N4
- Woodside Park Staff Yard (behind Woodside House), Earlham Grove, N22
- Priory Park Staff Yard, Barrington Road entrance, N8
- Bruce Castle Park Staff Yard, Lordship Lane, N17
- Down Lane Park Staff Yard, Park View Road, N17
- Albert Road Recreation Ground Staff Yard, Bidwell Gardens entrance, N11
Don’t dump this Christmas
Haringey will be offering a full range of services to help you get rid of any large items this Christmas – and stepping up enforcement action against the antisocial minority who disregard the law and flytip in the borough’s streets and open spaces.
The council offers a free white goods collection, a collection of other bulky items for a small fee, and a community clear-up service that visits every street in the borough to pick up large waste, so there’s never any need to dump anything.
There are also two Reuse and Recycling Centres, at Park View Road, Tottenham and Hornsey High Street, which accept a huge range of items. Both are open 8.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

- Think about the packaging of presents you buy your friends and family. Gift experiences, like concert tickets or gift vouchers, will save on excess packaging and wrapping paper.
- More waste food is generated at this time of year than any other period. If you receive a food waste service, remember to use it this Christmas.
- Don’t just throw away your Christmas cards. Recycle them. If you don’t receive a cardboard recycling service, you can also recycle them through the services offered by various high street stores.
- Buy a “bag for life” rather than coming home with lots of plastic bags each time you shop.
