feature: Crouch End Open Studios and more...
13 May 2008
Hornsey Town Hall and the Hornsey library gallery will be centre stage this month for the annual Crouch End Open Studios event.
It’s an art spectacular, with more than 30 local artists exhibiting at different venues, including their own homes, from 15-18 May.
With the support of Haringey Council and the Town Hall Community Partnership Board, a programme of new media work including films, site specific installations and large sculpture will be shown in unusual exhibition spaces in Hornsey Town Hall, which will be specially opened for the weekend of 17-18 May.
The council’s new Hornsey library gallery will show printmaking, ceramics, sculpture and photography and will be open for the four days of 15-18 May, along with 23 other venues.
“Crouch End Open Studios is going from strength to strength, and we’re delighted to be working with the council and the Town Hall Partnership Board to expand our list of venues,” said organiser Kim Valdez.
“We attracted more than 1,800 visitors last year. This year, with more artists and our new venues we are hoping for even more.”
Cllr Dhiren Basu, cabinet member for leisure, culture and lifelong learning, said:
“Our library with its newly refurbished gallery is at the heart of Crouch End, and we have a great programme of cultural events and activities not only this weekend but through the year.
“We are also planning to restore Hornsey town hall as a hub of civic and social activity.”
The weekend also sees the annual Crouch End Fun Run, in Priory Park on 18 May, with the adult 10k race getting underway at 10am, children’s races from noon, and entertainment and refreshments in the park.
Now in its 18th year, the charity event is organised by Hornsey YMCA.
This year it’s sponsored by Thornton’s Budgens, in Crouch End Broadway, which is also providing a third reason to visit Crouch End that weekend with an in-store food fair featuring independent suppliers.
