Haringey City Growth Business Awards 2008

Enterprise, achievement and diversity were celebrated last month at the Haringey Business Awards.

An ironmongers and tool merchants that has served four generations of Tottenham residents was presented with a lifetime achievement award.

H Glickman in Tottenham High Road has been run by the same family for more than 75 years. Established in 1880, it is one of the oldest businesses in Tottenham. Current managing director Derek Lewis started work there as a schoolboy in 1962, is Tottenham born and bred and still lives above the shop. “I suppose you could say I’m getting the hang of the job,” he said. “I’m five years from retiring, and with this award I think I’ve now reached my goal in life!” Other winners at the awards, held at Decorium in Wood Green last month, included master kiltmaker Thomas O’Shea, phone ringtone entrepreneur Alex Amosu, an organic baker, a major shopping centre, training and events companies, a French restaurant and a bookshop. More than 400 guests attended the event, introduced by Haringey Council leader Cllr George Meehan and hosted by Britain’s only black toastmaster Reuben Lynch.

Cllr Meehan said:

“Haringey is an excellent location for setting up and maintaining businesses, with a great entrepreneurial spirit among its working population.

“These awards give us a chance to recognise and celebrate the sterling work that is going on in Haringey. “A thriving business economy offers opportunities for long-term employment and business development that will help to make Haringey a place people want to work, visit and invest in.”
