feature: Boosting community safety
12 December 2007
A new CCTV system will be up and running across the borough next year.
Extra cameras coming on line will mean a total of 66 CCTV cameras keeping an eye on the borough 24/7, boosting community safety and enforcement.
There will be 13 new cameras in key areas, agreed after consultation with residents, traders and police. Installation has already begun in Muswell Hill and Bounds Green.
Managed and monitored from a new, state of the art control room, the cameras will be used for both community safety and traffic management purposes, and exclusively for community safety from 7pm to 7am.
Control room operators are in constant contact with police, and are trained to look out for potential crime, community safety incidents or antisocial behaviour so that police can be informed and the cameras redirected as appropriate.
They can also be used to support specific intelligence-led community safety initiatives or provide back up for policing major events, football games and so on.
Cllr Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for enforcement and safer communities, said:
“I met with traders and residents who had concerns about the quality of our CCTV coverage. I’m delighted that we have been able to respond with new cameras and a fantastic, high spec control room.
“Police intelligence tells us that most street crime occurs in the evenings and late at night. Now we will have 66 CCTV cameras dedicated to community safety throughout the borough between 7pm and 7am.
“Traffic management is important for all of us, and that will be one of the priorities for the network during the day. But we have agreed with police that where crimes occur, community safety takes priority. Control room operators will always be on the look out for antisocial or criminal behaviour. If they witness something they have links to the police and can alert them immediately.”
