Special Housing for Elderly and Disabled People

We provides homes that are specially designed for elderly and disabled people who may need support on a day-to-day basis. There are two main types of supported or special housing schemes:

  • Sheltered (or warden-assisted) Housing
  • Community Good Neighbour Schemes

Some Council schemes are designated 'Key Schemes', where the Council is trying to build up a group of tenants from a specific community in order to prevent isolation of elderly individual members of that community.

A number of housing associations provide sheltered housing for elderly people and the Council can nominate people to them. There are black and ethnic minority housing associations that provide sheltered housing for particular communities.

Tenants' and Residents' Associations

We encourage the development of tenants' and residents' associations to increase tenants' involvement with their housing and thus improve the effectiveness of the Council's Housing Service.
