National Insurance Statistics

The Department for Work and Pensions has made available data about National Insurance (NI) numbers issued to non-United Kingdom (UK) nationals at Local Authority (LA) level for the years 2002/03, 2003/04, 2004/05 and 2005/06.

National insurance numbers are issued to individuals over the age of 16 and are used:

  • to record a person’s NI contributions and credited contributions
  • for claiming social security benefits.

These data therefore provide a useful indication of the scale of economic migration from outside of the UK at a geographical level sufficient enough to perform analyses for Haringey and other London boroughs.

An analysis of the Haringey NI data can be accessed by following the link in the Attached Files section below.
