Claimant Count

What is the Claimant Count?

The Claimant Count is a count of those people who are claiming unemployment-related benefits such as Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) and National Insurance credits. To qualify for JSA people have to be actively seeking work. The data is provided on a monthly basis and is available by:

  • age
  • duration
  • gender

The Claimant Count is useful because:

  • it is regularly updated (monthly)
  • it is available down to a small geographical level (Lower Layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs)

However, because the Claimant Count is benefits based, it does miss out a large proportion of people who are unemployed and seeking work, but do not qualify for JSA.

Key Facts

  • At April 2007, 6.8 per cent (or 7,400 people) of Haringey's economically active population (i.e. people in work or actively seeking work, excluding economically active full time students) was claiming JSA; this is down from a claim rate of 7.7 per cent (or 8,205 people) at April 2006.
  • Haringey's JSA claim rate of 6.8 per cent is significantly higher the London average of 4.6 per cent and nearly twice the England average of 3.5 per cent.
  • Haringey currently has the fourth highest JSA claim rate in London behind Tower Hamlets (8.5 per cent), Hackney (8.0 per cent) and Newham (7.6 per cent).
  • The male JSA claim in Haringey, at 8.9 per cent, is the fourth highest in London behind Hackney (10.4 per cent), Newham (9.5 per cent) and Tower Hamlets (10.7 per cent).
  • With a rate of 4.4 per cent, female JSA claim rates in Haringey, although lower than male claim rates, are the fourth highest in London behind Hackney (5.1 per cent), Tower Hamlets (5.2 per cent) and Newham (4.9 per cent).
  • Young people are more likely to be claiming JSA in Haringey than any other age group - the JSA claim rate for economically active people aged 16 to 24 is 18.0 per cent. This is compared with claim rates of 5.4 per cent and 6.3 per cent for people aged 25 to 44 and 45 to 59 (females) /64 (males) respectively.
  • Some 26.7 per cent of people claiming JSA in the borough have been doing so for over a year. This is the second highest proportion in London, joint with Camden and behind Tower Hamlets (29 per cent).
  • At 15.8 per cent, Northumberland Park ward has the highest JSA claim rate in London. This is 2.3 percentage points higher than the second highest ranking London ward (East India & Lansbury ward in Tower Hamlets - 14.4 per cent).
