Incapacity Benefit and Severe Disablement Allowance
Background
Incapacity Benefit (IB) is paid to people who are assessed as being incapable of work and who meet certain contribution conditions.
Severe Disablement Allowance (SDA) is a benefit for people who are incapable of work and do not qualify for IB.
Claimants must be aged between 16 and 65 when they make their claim. There is no upper age limit for receiving the allowance once it has been awarded.
Key Facts
- At May 2006, the IB and SDA claim rate in Haringey was 8.1 per cent (or 12,530 people); this is down slightly from a rate of 8.2 per cent (or 12,700 people) at May 2005.
- Haringey's IB and SDA claim rate of 8.2 per cent is higher than both the London and England averages of 6.4 per cent and 7.1 per cent respectively.
- 42.9 per cent of IB and SDA claimants in Haringey are female while 57.1 per cent are male.
- 5.9 per cent of IB and SDA claimants are aged 16 to 24; 43.1 per cent are aged 25 to 44; 43.3 per cent are aged 45 to 59; and 7.6 per cent are 60 and over.
- 74.2 per cent of people claiming IB and SDA in Haringey have been doing so for over 2 years. The comparable rates for London and England are 76.2 per cent and 66.4 per cent respectively.
- Across Haringey, the highest IB and SDA claim rates are in Super Output Areas in the following wards: Bruce Grove, Hornsey, Noel Park and Woodside.
