Disability Living Allowance

Background

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a benefit for people who become disabled before the age of 65. DLA is payable to people who are disabled and need help with personal care, getting around or both.

Key Facts

  • At May 2006, 4.2 per cent (or 9,390 people) of Haringey residents were claiming DLA; this is up slightly from a claim rate of 4.1 per cent (or 9,150 people) at May 2005.
  • Haringey's DLA claim rate of 4.2 per cent is higher than the London average of 3.7 per cent but lower than the the England average of 4.5 per cent.
  • 50.7 per cent of DLA claimants in Haringey are female while 49.3 per cent are male.
  • 10.5 per cent of DLA claimants in Haringey are under 16; 6.0 per cent are aged 16 to 24; 27.5 per cent are aged 25 to 44; 27.6 per cent are aged 45 to 59; and 28.4 per cent are 60 and over.
  • 84.6 per cent of people claiming DLA in Haringey have been doing so for over 2 years. The comparable rates for London and England are 84.5 per cent and 86.1 per cent respectively.
  • Across Haringey, the highest DLA claim rates are in Super Output Areas in the following wards: Bounds Green, Bruce Grove, Fortis Green, Harringay, Hornsey, Noel Park, Tottenham Green, Tottenham Hale, White Hart Lane and Woodside.
