Which Scheme?
Graduates interested in a career in management should submit an application for the generic stream, while those interested in one of the specific professional career paths advertised should apply for the relevant professional stream.
The different streams offer a number of alternative career routes. As a result, differences in the development programmes and salaries exist, but as you progress in your career, these differences will reduce, regardless of your selected career path.
The Professional Stream:
Graduates on a specific professional stream will experience:
- Working in the relevant service with opportunities to experience the breadth and depth of their professional area
- A one-year development programme providing a real overview of how Councils work and skills development to help you achieve the competencies required of our graduate trainees
- Support and challenge through your line manager, dedicated programme support, mentoring, networking and opportunities to work with senior managers
- Opportunity to work towards gaining an additional professional qualification and on completion, progress your career in this chosen path
The Generic Stream:
Graduates on this stream are placed within a particular service, and we try to match interests/aspirations. During the two years of the programme you will experience:
- A development programme tailored to meet the competencies required of graduate trainees, leading to a nationally recognised qualification
- A varied and challenging work programme with increasing levels of independence working on a range of projects
- Work arrangements which provide experience of the full range of council activities
- Support and challenge through your line manager, dedicated programme support, mentoring, networking and opportunities to work with senior managers
- Opportunities to progress to a role suited to your skills and interests at the end of the programme
