Our Borough

If you are thinking of teaching in London we believe Haringey to be the perfect place for all educators, whether you are just starting out in your teaching career, or looking to further your experiences through leadership opportunities within schools. Situated in north London and only a 20 minute tube ride from central London, Haringey offers the unique blend of the city and the country, with the benefits of both inner city living and rural surroundings nearby. Haringey is also the home of Alexandra Palace, and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club and therefore offers something for everyone.

Haringey is one of London's 32 boroughs. It is located in the north of the capital and more than 11 square miles in area. Nearly half of its 224,500 people come from ethnic minority backgrounds Haringey also benefits from areas of natural beauty. There are 32 parks and recreation grounds offering a wide range of outdoor sports and activities. The beautiful parks and open spaces, covering over 700 acres, include part of the rugged Hampstead Heath, the enchanting Highgate Wood and the adjacent Queens Wood, which is designated a local nature reserve.

Historic Alexandra Palace, the birthplace of television and now a national exhibition centre provides splendid panoramic views across London. Facilities include a range of elegant function rooms, an ice rink with year-round indoor skating, and 196 acres of beautiful parkland suitable for long walks and recreation. Haringey also has a rich history. Bruce Castle, a Grade I listed 16th Century manor house set in 20 acres of parkland is the home of Haringey's local history collections and archives.

If this is not enough, Haringey is also within easy reach of nearby countryside and has excellent tube and rail links to Kings Cross, Euro Tunnel; Heathrow and Stansted Airports, if you feel the need to go somewhere else.

Our Schools

We have a wide economic and cultural diversity which is reflected in the composition of our schools and therefore offers a wide choice of schools to suit all tastes in whatever stage of your teaching career.

We have:

61 primary schools
11 secondary schools
1 Sixth Form Centre
1 pupil referral unit
4 special schools
10 Children’s centres, with a further 8 opening in September 2008
1 further education College

There are 61 primary schools in Haringey including infant and junior schools. There are eleven secondary schools, six of which have sixth form provision; seven are community schools (one of which is for girls only); two are voluntary aided (one Roman Catholic, one Seventh Day Adventist); one City Academy which is a mixed Church of England school and one Foundation school.

We also maintain four special schools, which educate pupils with a range of special educational needs arising from hearing impairment, physical disability, learning difficulty and emotional and behavioural difficulties. We are committed to providing and developing opportunities for the integration and inclusion of pupils with special educational needs where possible.

In January 2007 our school population was approx 35,000. About half of all pupils speak English as an additional language (EAL). The proportion of pupils using EAL in primary schools is 53% in 2007. In secondary schools it is 45%. Key Stage 2 - in 2006 75% of pupils achieved level 4 or above in English and 70% of pupils achieved level 4 or above in Mathematics. The national average is 79% for English and 76% for Maths (Source: DfCSF, 2006).

GCSE - in 2006 51.7% of pupils gained 5+ A*-C grades or equivalent compared to a national average of 59.2%. This represented a significant improvement since 2001 when 30.9% of pupils gained 5+A*-C grades (Source: DfCSF, 2005).

£178 million has been awarded to our secondary schools as part of the building schools for the future programme. A new sixth form centre opened in September 2007.

From small voluntary aided to large secondary; from Highgate to Wood Green and Crouch End to Tottenham, we are confident we have the type of school to fit the need of any teacher wanting the challenge and reward of living and working in London.

Our Leadership and Management

Leadership in our schools is amongst the best anywhere and is well focused on the challenges and opportunities for our young people. Improvements demonstrated thus far have been due to leaders who have high aspirations, an ability to both recognise the value of the community and engage it, and a belief that the link between disadvantage and achievement can be broken. That evidence now exists. This strength is not only represented at headteacher level, but within other senior posts and in some excellent examples of subject leadership. Our focus now is to sustain and build on this high quality of leadership.

Support network

We offer support and development opportunities for middle managers, senior managers and headteachers within schools by providing an extensive professional development programme. Programmes are designed to address the needs identified through school self-evaluation and improvement plans, the children and young people’s service plan, course evaluations and school improvement meetings with headteachers.

Middle management

(Subject leaders, heads of year and key stage, heads of department, séances) The teaching and learning team runs regular courses for foundation and key stage co-ordinators in primary schools and links with a range of partner training providers to provide access to broad spectrum training opportunities. In secondary schools, subject leaders are supported through regular training from our national strategy team. Additionally, we have one of the most active programmes of middle manager training available through the National College of School Leadership and London Challenge.

Senior management

(Deputy headteachers, assistant headteachers and senior management team members) Support for senior managers in Haringey is widely available through induction programmes, regular meetings and forums where representatives from the National College for School Leadership and other leading providers, deliver training in conjunction with our professional development centre.

We also offer guidance on the national professional qualification for headship (NPQH). Working with London Challenge, we provide opportunities for aspiring deputy headteachers to move to headship through placements in other schools, where they can work as trainee headteachers and gain the knowledge and experience to make the next step up in their career.
