Learners Support at HALS

Coming back to study as an adult can be daunting and it is easy to find reasons to put it off. You may be worried about paying the fees, or committing your spare time. But at HALS we can offer you a lot of guidance and support through your learning journey and help you to get the best out of your course.

I am thinking of returning to learning or getting a job

If you need information and advice about your education and work options and you are 20 or over you can come and talk to us about learning opportunities, career ideas and getting employment.

This service is provided by HALS Employment and Learning Advisers (ELAs) who offer career information to people who live in North London area and are 20 or older. Additionally, you can access career advice if one or more of the following statement apply to you:

I do not have the equivalent of an NVQ Level 2 qualification or above
I have a disability or learning difficulty
I have literacy or numeracy needs or English for Speakers of Other languages (ESOL) needs
I am a labour market returner, lone parent, 50+, from a black, minority or ethnic group, or an offender.
I am attending one of your courses, and am 20 or older.

What if I need childcare to take part?

Some HALS courses include support with childcare. This could mean a place in a crèche whilst the course is taking place or money to pay a registered childminder. Ask for details when you are applying for a course. If you are coming in for a guidance interview, we do not have childcare facilities. You are welcome to bring your child but you will need to supervise them at all times.

I have trouble with reading and writing or using numbers

We offer courses to help you with your reading and writing, or using numbers, either in a group situation or one-to-one. HALS offers literacy (reading and writing) and numeracy (numbers) skills development in the following ways:

Individual and group support for a wide range of vocational courses
Family literacy and numeracy classes in local schools and community centres
Courses to improve your reading, writing and numeracy skills

I have difficulty speaking or understanding English

When you first come to see us we may ask you to bring a friend or relation or another person from your community who speaks English with you. If you cannot do this, we will:

See if there is a member of staff who speaks your language who can talk to you
Find an interpreter who can talk to you in your language in person or on the phone
Ask if you would like written information about HALS in your own language.

When you apply for a course we will assess your English skills for reading and writing. We will use this information to decide which level of course is best for you and find an appropriate course to suit your needs.

I have a disability / medical condition that may affect my learning

Please tell us about your disability / medical condition. This is especially important if you think it will affect the way you are able to take part in a course, and particularly if you will need any additional support and/or specialist equipment. The sooner you let us know the sooner we can respond. If you let us know when you apply we will offer you:

A confidential interview with a member of staff to make sure that the course you have chosen is right for you and to discuss with you any support or adjustments we can make.
An initial assessment at the course induction to help us identify how the course content/equipment/ materials can be adapted to help you take part.
Regular one-to-one meetings with your Learning Support Officer (LSO) or tutor. At these meetings you can discuss your progress on the course and discuss any problems you are having, including difficulties related to your disability / condition. You and your LSO/ Tutor can work together towards a solution.
The opportunity to discuss with your tutor any concessions that can be made to enable you to complete your assessments when working towards a qualification. If you think this may affect you we need to know as early as possible so that arrangements can be made in good time.

We will try and meet your individual needs. However, if we are unable to make suitable adjustments, we will do our best to put you in touch with another organisation that can.
