Workstep
The Haringey Workstep project is part of Haringey Council’s Employment and Skills Team. It provides support to people with a disability or health issue to help them get and keep a job, and works to tackle barriers to work and ensure equality of opportunity for all.
Workstep could help you if you have a disability or health issue and are either:
- claiming benefit and looking for work for 16 hours or more a week or
- currently in work and feel at risk of losing your job
What's involved?
Workstep offers confidential one-to-one support from the Workstep co-ordinator who will work with you – and current or potential employers - to draw up an individual package of support based on an agreed plan, targeted to overcome the specific barriers and challenges you face.
If you are out of work, Workstep can:
- support you to identify employment or further training opportunities,
- offer benefits advice – including how your benefits may be affected when starting work,
- support with your job search and approaching employers,
- coach you for job interviews,
- give assistance with travel expenses,
- and could help arrange a work experience or work trial for you to better prepare you for employment.
Workstep also offers additional support in the initial months of employment to help with your induction, and can offer training in the workplace to support employers and colleagues to better understand appropriate ways of addressing the challenges you may face in your work environment.
If you are in work, but feel that you are in danger of losing your job, Workstep offers ongoing support in the workplace, whether or not you sought employment support through Workstep to get your job. This in-work support focuses on overcoming barriers or stress you may face in your working life as a result of your disability or ill-health, and is offered for as long as you feel you need support.
