Personal Best (Preparation for Event Volunteering)

Personal Best is a unique opportunity to develop skills and knowledge and increase your opportunities for work and training. It offers guidance and support together with an accredited qualification to raise your aspirations and build confidence.

Graduates of the Personal Best Programme will be guaranteed an interview to become a games time volunteer for the Olympics in 2012.

What's involved?

Personal Best is designed to meet your individual needs and is based on the assessments and interviews carried out with you before and during your induction.

We will provide a creative, learning environment, supporting you in gaining a tailor-made accredited qualification at Level 1.

The course is an introduction to volunteering at events and in the community.

This is achieved through 9 taught units covering a range of learning outcomes together with a minimum of 30 hours of volunteering.

The 9 units covering the following:

  • Becoming a Volunteer
  • Volunteering and the Olympics
  • Emergency and Basic Fire Awareness
  • Public Safety Awareness
  • Understanding Effective Customer Relations
  • Understanding Equality and Diversity
  • Introduction to Conflict Resolution in a Public Environment
  • Developing Team and Interpersonal Skills
  • Preparing for and Reflecting on a Volunteer Placement

Whilst you are on the Personal Best course you will receive regular progress reviews conducted by your tutor.

You will help to provide evidence for your portfolio which could include observations, quizzes and questioning by your tutor.

Your tutor will provide informal regular feedback throughout the course.

You will be given the opportunity to discuss how well you are progressing on the course. We can also help you with

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible you should be:

  • 18 or over and unemployed or economically inactive.
  • You must not already have achieved a level 2 qualification or equivalent i.e. 5 GCSEs Grade A-C.
  • Must have access to public funds and have rights to work in the United Kingdom

Course start every month until Oct 2010.
