Heritage and Conservation Regeneration Projects

Haringey Council’s heritage regeneration projects are designed and delivered to create economic vitality and prosperity for all. Planning, Regeneration & Economy's priority is to encourage lifetime well-being through place making and creating the conditions where people want to live, work and visit.

The Major Projects team has been successfully awarded numerous grant funding streams to support various heritage and conservation projects. These include:

This funding has supported historic building improvements in deprived town centres within some of Haringey’s conservation areas. These projects take an explicitly conservation-led regeneration approach and are designed to help areas that have both heritage merit and real social and economic need for investment.

The delivery of these projects have been very successful in Haringey and resulted in a ‘best practice’ approach that has been adopted by other local authorities. Haringey has consistently been one of the most successful authorities in London for drawing down heritage regeneration grants.

We are proud to say that the repair and restoration of Windsor Parade, 538-554 High Road N17, funded under the Heritage Lottery Fund Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI), was nominated a highly commended finalist in the 2008 Regeneration & Renewal Award.

Below is a summary of some of the conservation-led regeneration projects completed to date.

Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS)

This was English Heritage and Haringey Council’s programme to refurbish groups of historic buildings on Tottenham High Road in Bruce Grove town centre funded by English Heritage, European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Haringey Council and private contributions from property owners. The scheme offered grant-aid to repair the external front elevation of buildings and shop front renewal.

The HERS programme was part of a wider Tottenham High Road regeneration strategy adopted by the Council to regenerate the Bruce Grove area.

Archway Road Shutter Replacement Project

164, 212, 216, 224, 228, 230 & 238 Archway Road – completed Jan 2008

The aim of this project was to improve the local shopping centre by removing external solid shutters that hide shop fronts, attract graffiti and make the area look and feel run down, discouraging people from visiting the area. This project was funded by LABGI (Local Area Business Growth Initiative) and the Council.  The project funded 7 properties to have their solid external shutters removed and replaced them with internal open grille roller shutters where it was structurally possible.
