Conservation Area No 10 - Wood Green Common
The Wood Green Common Conservation Area lies west of Wood Green's busy shopping centre and tube station. It covers the ancient open space of the same name and buildings around, the adjoining Avenue Gardens open space, a few quiet residential streets just north of both spaces and the embankment of the former Palace Gates Railway Line. Its western boundary is the embankment/cutting of the extant East Coast Main Line railway, and the Conservation Area includes station buildings at Alexandra Park station.
Its character is dominated by the areas of green space (Avenue Gardens and Wood Common) that were originally combined as one large common. These give the area a sense of spaciousness and form its main focal points; planting and mature trees are abundant throughout. The residential streets are lined with two and three storey mostly of late Victorian and Edwardian properties of traditional appearance and architectural merit. There are larger civic, institutional and educational buildings around the Common, many fine nineteenth and twentieth century pieces of architecture, now joined by the brand new Heartlands High School on the western edge, enclosing the Common and making a significant contribution of architectural quality.

The Wood Green Common Conservation Area was first designated on 26 March 1976 and protected the majority of the area currently covered. It was extended on 16 September 1991 to include the buildings on the south and east sides of the Common and on 11 February 2008 to include railway land and the Alexandra Palace station.
On 11 February 2008 the Council approved a character appraisal for the Wood Green Common Conservation Area. More details on the appraisal process, programme and purpose can be found on our Conservation Area Character Appraisals page.
