North Tottenham Conservation Area

North Tottenham Conservation Area

The North Tottenham Conservation Area runs along the northern stretch of Tottenham High Road, from south of its junction with Lordship Lane / Lansdowne Road to the northern boundary of the borough, as well as parts of some roads off it.

The area around the junctions of White Hart Lane and Northumberland Park with the High Road forms a historic village core with a history of settlement going back to Roman times and a significant cluster of statutory Listed Buildings. These Listed Buildings include several large, important Queen Anne and Georgian houses that are listed Grade II*, including Dial House, Percy House and nos. 808-810 (pictured above).

Further south the Conservation Area and Tottenham High Road are dominated by a cultural institution of national significance; the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. The modern stadium sits back from the road and is just outside the Conservation Area but a number of significant historic buildings sit between it and the High Road, including places strongly associated with the Club's history such as the former White Hart public house and The Red House.

Designation and Character Appraisal

As one of the most important Conservation Areas in the borough, North Tottenham is the second oldest Conservation Area in Haringey, the core around the junctions of White Hart Lane and Northumberland Park with the High Road being originally designated on 28 March 1972.

The second, separate, southern section of the High Road between Brereton Road and Lordship Lane was designated on 26 March 1978. The small central section from Brereton Road to Whitehall Street that joined the two was subsequently designated on 16 September 1991. Chapel Place, to the north west of the junction between the High Road and White Hart Lane was included in a further extension on 14 March 1995. The current conservation area boundary was further amended on 13 July 1998 to include the section of the High Road between the northern borough boundary and Brantwood Road together with several other minor additions and deletions.

The North Tottenham Conservation Area is part of the Tottenham High Road Historic Corridor of six connected Conservation Areas. It has a single adopted character appraisal which can be downloaded from the Tottenham High Road Historic Corridor page.
