Conservation Area No 3 - Muswell Hill
The Muswell Hill Conservation Area covers the vibrant shopping centre of Muswell Hill and many of the surrounding residential streets. Muswell Hill is prominent in the landscape of north London and the west of the borough of Haringey, continuing west the ridge from Alexandra Palace, the centrepiece of the neighbouring Alexandra Palace and Park Conservation Area. The Vallance Road Conservation Area borders Muswell Hill to the north east, while Fortis Green and Rookfield are short distances to the west and south respectively.
Within Haringey, Muswell Hill is a notable and well-preserved example of an Edwardian suburb of considerable consistency and quality. The distinctive three and four storey red brick Edwardian parades of shops and apartments, and their hard streetscape that form the heart of the area, provide a vibrant focus that contrasts with the mature planted front gardens and substantial trees within the quieter residential streets that surround it. The surrounding residential areas have a mixture of two and three storey red brick semi-detached and terraced buildings.

Designation and Character Appraisal
Muswell Hill was first designated a Conservation Area on 1 March 1974. The conservation area was extended on 16 September 1991 to include several roads towards the north east and west that reinforce the Edwardian character of the of the core area. The conservation area boundary was further extended on 11th February 2008 by the addition of five small areas; at Midhurst Avenue; the frontage of Fortismere School, Tetherdown; Eastwood Road and Burlington Road; Colney Hatch Lane, Barnard Hill and Goodwyn’s Vale; and Alexandra Park Road.
On 11 February 2008 the Council approved a character appraisal for the Muswell Hill Conservation Area.
