Here to HELP

Introduction

  • The here to HELP scheme is a British Gas initiative which operates within Haringey to assist those residents on means tested or disability related benefits to insulate their properties.
  • Any householder aged over 70 is also eligible for the scheme
  • Those residents not in receipt of any benefits are also entitled to discounted home insulation measures.
  • Home security measures are also installed for elderly residents in areas covered by the New Deal for Communities.
  • The work is carried out by Baring Insulation, a locally based contractor with an excellent reputation for reliablity and quality.

Those residents who are eligible for the here to HELP scheme will also receive a Quality of Life telephone call from a trained customer service agent to ensure that they are claiming all the benefits to which they are entitled and also to determine whether they may benefit from the services offered by one of the Charity Partners.

From April 2005 to March 2006 over 1000 residents received over £500,000 worth of home insulation and security measures.

Quality of Life Telephone Call

All those eligible for the here to HELP scheme will be contacted by a trained customer service agent who will check that the resident is receiving all the benefits to which they are entitled and also whether they would benefit from assistance from one of the Charity Partners.

The Charity Partners are:

Family Welfare Association

  • Provider of grants and social work support to the poorest families and people of all ages since 1869

Save the Children

  • Fights for children in the UK and around the world who suffer from poverty, disease, injustice and violence.

National Debtline

  • Provider of free confidential and independent advice on how to deal with debt problems

Help the Aged

  • An international charity fighting to free disadvantaged older people from poverty, isolation and neglect

Scope Uk

  • Disability association whose focus in on people with cerebral palsy

RNIB

  • A national UK charity providing a good range of information for blind or partially sighted people.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible for the here to HELP scheme you must own your own home, rent from a private landlord or Housing Association, be aged over 70 or in receipt of one of the following benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Housing Benefit
  • Council Tax Benefit
  • Disablement Pension
  • Including Constant Attendance Allowance
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Disablity Living Allowance
  • Working Tax Credit  With income less than £14,600
  • Child Tax Credit  With income less than £14,600
  • War Disablement Pension which includes a mobility supplement or which includes constant attendance allowance
  • Income based job seekers' allowance
