Transferable Discount Scheme - frequently asked questions

How many Transferable Discount Grants are available?

The number of grants available each year is limited to the budget set aside for the scheme. Once all of the money for the year has been allocated, then no further applications will be accepted that year.

I have a one bedroom property, am I eligible for this scheme?

This scheme is only open to Council tenants who have a council flat or house with two or more bedrooms.

Could I apply for a transferable discount grant to purchase a property abroad?

The property you purchase via this scheme must be in the United Kingdom.

I have received an offer of a transferable discount grant but what happens if I don’t complete in time?

If you are near completion, we may be able to allow you more time.  If you aren’t near to completing, you could lose the grant and you will probably have to reapply in the next financial year.

Do I have to pay back the grant when I sell the property?

If you sell your property within three years of purchase, you will have to repay a third of the grant for each year or part year left.  After the three years there are no penalties.
