Right to Buy
Some frequently asked questions
How is my property valued?
Each property is valued individually by the Council's valuers according to market values at the time you apply. If you disagree with the price, you can ask for the District Valuer to carry out an independent valuation, but you have to accept the District Valuer’s valuation even if it is lower than the Council’s.
|back to topDo I have to pay for the valuation?
No, you will not have to pay for the Council to value your property.
|back to topCan I include previous tenancies even if they were with a housing association?
Yes, you can include all previous tenancies that were held with a public sector landlord (ie not a private rental).
|back to topCan my son/daughter join in the purchase, even if they do not live with me?
You can share the right to buy with up to three members of your family who are not joint tenants but they must live in the property as their only or main home. Apart from your husband or wife, anyone sharing the right to buy must have lived in the property for the 12 months before you apply to buy your home.
|back to topCan I sell my property after I have bought it?
Yes, but if you sell within the first five years of owning it, you will have to pay back a percentage of the amount you sell the property for. The amount you repay depends on the amount of discount you received when you bought your home and how soon you sell it.
If you want to sell you home within 10 years of buying it, you must first offer the property back to the Council. If we decide to buy the property, we must pay the full market value.
