Buying a Home

If you cannot afford to buy your own home on the open market, then maybe we can help you.

There are many low cost home ownership options that have been designed to help anyone looking for an affordable home to buy and this section is for council tenants, waiting list applicants, first time buyers, key workers and anyone who would like to take advantage of this assistance.

There are five ways in which you could be assisted in purchasing a property:

  • Right to Buy – council tenants only. Further information can be found in the 'Guide to buying your home', which can be downloaded as a PDF in the attached files section at the bottom of the page.
  • Transferable Discount Scheme – council tenants only. Further information can be found in the guide to 'Transferable discount schemes', which is located in the attached files section at the bottom of the page.
  • New Build Homebuy – (formerly known as Shared Ownership) – council and registered social landlord tenants, key workers and those on the council’s housing register especially first-time buyers
  • Open Market Homebuy – council and registered social landlord tenants, people on the council’s approved waiting list, key workers and others on the council’s housing register especially first-time buyers
  • First-time Buyers Initiative (FTBI) – this is specifically for first-time buyers.

Intermediate Rent – This scheme is for key workers. You can apply for rented properties and pay between approximately 70%-80% of the ‘market’ rent charged by a private landlords.

New Build Homebuy, Open Market Homebuy, First-time Buyer Initiative and Intermediate Rent and are all Housing Options for affordable properties in the north London sub-region (Haringey, Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Islington and Westminster). To find out more, please click on the link to the Housing Options website in the external links section at the bottom of the page.

The Council owns a wide range of property throughout the borough and over time, for various reasons, some become surplus to the council’s needs and these properties for sale are usually sold by auction or tender. The properties we market are mainly for residential use but range from garages, small parcels of land and industrial buildings.

If you find that you cannot afford to buy at the moment, but would like assistance in looking for a good quality home to rent the National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS) will be able to provide you with a list of accredited letting agents in your area. A link to their website is provided in the external links section.
