School Journeys
School travel plans
School travel plans are being introduced across Haringey to reduce traffic congestion and parking problems around schools.
Their aim is to actively encourage children, parents and staff to walk or cycle to school. Walking and cycling boosts their health, well-being and allows them to travel independently and safely. Schools are also encouraged to promote public transport such as buses, trains and tubes.
Schools with approved travel plans are awarded grants from Transport for London, and the Department for Children, Schools and Families. Schools can receive funding for anything from engineering measures, to planning curriculum work and classroom resources.

Walk on Wednesday (WoW) encourages parents and pupils to walk to school at least once a week.
WoW is a flexible scheme which can reduce the number of children driven to school regularly and increase the amount of physical activity pupils take in their everyday lives.
As part of this scheme a school will be expected to promote walking to school on Wednesday. At the end of every month the pupils who have walked to school every Wednesday in that month will receive a badge and postcard.

A walking bus is where a group of school children walk to and from school under the supervision of grown up volunteers, one at the front (The Driver) and one at the back (The Conductor). They walk the same way each day, stopping at “bus stops” to pick up and drop off kids along the way.
