Sustainable Modes of Travel to School Strategy
About the strategy
The Sustainable Modes of Travel Strategy contains our plans to help make walking, cycling and public transport a realistic and attractive option for journeys to and from schools in the borough. The strategy aims to:
- reduce the number of people travelling to school and college by car and increase the numbers walking and cycling
- improve the information that parents and pupils have about the different ways they can travel to school
- improve the safety of routes to and from schools
- improve the health and wellbeing of children
- improve accessibility to, from and between schools.
Why are we doing this?
We have a duty under the Education and Inspections Act 2006 to produce this strategy and it is a duty that we welcome. The strategy builds on the previous work undertaken in the School Travel Plan programme which saw us deliver 100 percent of School Travel Plans well in advance of Government deadlines and provides a clear direction for future work to promote active, healthy and safe access to our schools.
Our vision
We will work together to bring about a change in school travel behaviours in favour of sustainable transport in order to reduce congestion and pollution, increase access to education and learning enabling pupils in Haringey to travel actively in a safe environment.
This strategy will guide us in ensuring that travel to our schools:
- does not harm, but protects our environment
- encourages physical activity and healthy lifestyles in our communities
- provides our pupils with independence and life skills
- is a safer and more pleasant experience for everyone
- enables young people to remain in education post 16.
