Cycling

Two cyclists

Studies in London have revealed that, over short distances at least, the pedal cycle in all its forms is capable of being the fastest, most inexpensive, reliable and beneficial form of wheeled transport.

The pedal cycle is particularly suitable for local trips, a third of which are under a mile long and 85 percent of which are less than five miles in length. Cycling, together with other measures such as travel plans, traffic restraint and initiatives to encourage more walking are crucial to reducing congestion, improving the environment and promoting social inclusion and better health.

Haringey has a network of cycle routes across the borough including cycle lanes on main roads, separated cycle lanes and special fully signed, quiet routes.

Maps

The borough is part of the London Cycle Network and London Cycle Guide No.5 provides a map of Haringey’s on and off road cycle routes. To get a map and further information visit the Transport for London website in the external links section.

You can also find a leaflet that includes a map of Haringey's cycle routes in the documents table below. It is a very large file and may take some time to download, so if you would like a paper copy you can pick one up from libraries, customer care centres, sports centres and cycle shops. Or you can request a copy by calling 020 8489 5873.

Benefits

Cycling is one of the most enjoyable and effective forms of aerobic exercise and regardless of your age, gender and initial fitness, just minutes cycling, on most days of the week, will lead to significant benefits for your health:

  • improving your strength, stamina and cardio-vascular fitness. Cycling helps to lower both blood pressure and the resting heart rate
  • shedding those unwanted pounds. A cycle ride increases calorie consumption and raises the metabolic rate, which can help to lose weight
  • cycling is friendlier for your joints; less pressure is exerted on the joints than in running
  • reducing stress and deterring depression; improving your confidence and mental capacities.
