Potholes can form through repeated wear of the road surface, particularly during harsh weather. Although we inspect our roads and footways for defects and hazards, we welcome reports of potholes from the public.

How we prioritise repairs

To use our funding efficiently we assess the severity, nature and location of defects to decide the urgency and necessity of repairs. We give priority to those regarded as hazardous or serious.

To ensure that consistent standards are adopted throughout the borough, clearly defined categories known as ‘Intervention Levels’ are set. Details of these are set out our Standards for Potholes and Intervention Levels (PDF 56KB).
