Wood Green Automatic Public Toilet
Haringey Council has installed a new automatic public convenience in Wood Green.
An automatic public convenience (APC) is a technologically advanced ‘automatic’ public toilet - often described as a ‘super loo’ - that includes the following standard features:
- Touchless flush and back up flush system
- Automatic soap, water and air unit
- Sharps, nappy and litter disposal
- Computer controlled lighting, heating, locking
- Flexible direct access door entry system, with emergency access
- Anti-vandal and anti-social behaviour prevention
- Full Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) features
Why this location was chosen
The location was chosen because there have historically been problems with urinating in public in the side turnings and alleyways off Wood Green High Road. Wood Green High Road is a highly visible location which should promote high levels of usage. It is a well-lit and often very busy location which should help to make people feel safe about using the APC. From a technical point of view local surveys also indicated that this was an appropriate location for connections to be made to water, sewage, electric and telephone supplies that are necessary for the operation of the APC.
Life expectancy of the APC
The APC is expected to last for 15 - 20 years.
Responsibility for maintenance of the APC
The APC is self cleaning and is under a 7-day-a-week cleaning agreement. An operative attends daily to carry out internal and external cleaning of the APC, and also tops up consumables and cleaning materials. The operative checks the APC for damage and arranges for engineers to visit and make any necessary repairs. A service engineer attends the unit twice a week to carry out preventative maintenance and within 24 hours of notification to rectify out of service situations.
Paying for the new APC
Funding for the installation of the new APC was secured through the Safer Stronger Communities Fund (SSCF). Regular cleaning and maintenance of the new APC after the first year will become part of the Public Convenience maintenance responsibility that currently rests within the Waste Management Service in the Streetscene Business Unit.
Using the APC
There is a 10p charge to use the APC. It is free to use for people who have a Radar key.
There is a time limit of 15 minutes for users of the APC. However, if access is gained via a Radar key then user time is unlimited.
