Man sweeping streetsStreet cleansing and refuse collection services are provided by the Council in partnership with Veolia.

The main roads of the borough are almost all swept on a daily basis, often more than once per day. Residential roads are swept on average twice per week. Street sweeping services are now provided on six days a week, Monday to Saturday.

Village-based approach

Veolia has organised its street cleansing operations into eight villages.

Each village has a small operations depot where the staff and equipment are based, meaning that all the sweepers can reach the patch they are responsible for on foot. This eliminates the need for vehicles to be used to transport street sweeping teams around the borough, which is helping to cut carbon emissions.

The villages match the Area Committees, with the exception of Muswell Hill (which is divided into two because of its large geographical area). The street sweeping staff wear special uniforms which are branded for the village in which they work.
