What is the North London Joint Waste Strategy?
The Council, in its role as Waste Planning Authority, is required under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 to prepare a 'Waste Local Plan'. A Waste Local Plan is a statutory plan that addresses the land-use aspects of waste management. It deals with all waste managed in its area including that generated by businesses and the construction industry in addition to what is produced by households.
Haringey Council is working in partnership with six other North London boroughs (Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Islington and Waltham Forest) to tackle the waste challenge. The North London Waste Authority was established in 1986 to manage the disposal of rubbish for North London.
The partner authorities have produced a joint waste strategy, which sets out how municipal waste will be managed for the period 2004-2020. 'Municipal' means waste from households, or waste that because of its nature is similar to waste from households. This includes waste from schools and other local authority activities such as street cleansing, as well as other commercial and any industrial waste that Councils collect.

Haringey is working with the six other North London boroughs to produce a Joint Waste Planning Document. This is required as a part of the local development framework and aims to identify possible sites for use in waste management (municipal and or commercial waste) up to 2020.

A Strategic Environmental Assessment (or SEA) is an environmental review of a draft strategy. It identifies and assesses the likely key environmental impacts of the draft strategy, and makes recommendations for changes to the strategy to reduce these. The findings of the SEA process should be incorporated into the final strategy that is produced, and a public consultation forms part of the SEA process.
Public consultation is currently being undertaken on the revisions to the North London Joint Waste Strategy, resulting from the SEA and on the SEA Environmental Report which has been produced as a result of the process. This consultation period will end on 17 June 2008.
Once formally adopted the revised North London Joint Waste Strategy will be used to facilitate the procurement of new waste management services to increase recycling and recovery, and divert more waste away from disposal by landfill and incineration. The ‘North London Joint Waste Strategy’ also sets out the framework for how waste will be managed when the North London Waste Authority’s current main waste disposal contract comes to an end in 2014.
