Safe disposal of Asbestos

Asbestos can be a hazard to the environment and to your health. For more information about asbestos please use the link to the asbestos page in the related links section on the right, and the links in the external links section below.

You are responsible for disposing of asbestos in a safe and responsible manner.  If you have cement bonded asbestos from your home to dispose of there are three ways to dispose of it safely.

If you have any other type of asbestos to dispose of or the asbestos is from a business please use a licensed private contractor.  More information can be found using the links contained on this page.

Take cement bonded asbestos waste from your home to the Re-Use and Recycling Centre at Hornsey Street, Islington, N7 8HU

If you are taking asbestos to this location please take proof of your address with you, for example a Council Tax bill or utility bill.

Before taking asbestos to this location please take the following steps:

  • Ensure that it is double wrapped in thick polythene sheeting and fully sealed with strong tape, or alternatively in thick plastic sacks if the pieces are small.
  • Take care not to break any material to fit it into a bag. Under no circumstances should you use a saw or disc cutter to reduce the size of the sheets as this will cause asbestos dust to be generated.
  • Contact the Supervisor at the Re-use and Recycling Centre on 020 8884 5645 or 020 8884 5633 before taking asbestos to the site to check there is space in the asbestos container.  Hornsey Street does not have a licence to store asbestos outside the container.  You will need to tell the Supervisor how much asbestos you will be taking e.g. the number of sheets or sacks.
  • There is a vehicle height restriction at the Hornsey Street Re-Use and Recycling Centre of 1.9 metres (6 feet).  Please check your vehicle will be able to enter the centre.

If you do not take these actions you will not be able to take asbestos to this centre.

Use the collection service provided by the Corporation of London, on behalf of Haringey Council

The Hazardous Waste Collection and Disposal Service will collect hazardous waste for disposal providing it does not amount to more than 11.5 square metres (125 square feet).  Asbestos must be wrapped in either heavy duty builders’ rubble bags or heavy gauge polythene sheeting.

To arrange a collection call the Corporation of London on 020 7332 3433.  You will need to tell them:

  • The name of the London Borough you live in
  • Your full name, address and telephone number
  • Details of the items to be collected

You can have one free collection of asbestos each year but this is dependent on the quantity.

For further information phone the Corporation of London on 020 7332 3433 or follow the link to the Corporation of London website in the external links section at the bottom of this page.
