Dog Fouling

It is against the law to allow a dog to foul in a public place and make no attempt to clean up after it. Owners can face a fixed penalty fine of £75 or a criminal prosecution in the courts which carries a maximum penalty of £1000.
The dangers of dog mess
As well as being unpleasant, dog fouling is also a serious health hazard. Dog mess carries potential diseases for both humans and dogs:
- Toxocara T Canis is a serious infection which can potentially cause severe eye infection and, in the most serious cases, make humans go blind. Children are most at risk;
- Parvo is a potentially fatal disease which is transferred between dogs.

Let us know about dog fouling in your area
If you are aware of a problem area for dog fouling, please report it to our Street Enforcement team, letting us know when and where the problem seems to occur to enable us to target our work.
Residents should not approach irresponsible dog owners directly, and are not expected to give the person's address unless they're already known as a problem owner.
