Duty of Care

Duty of Care is a law which says that businesses must take all reasonable steps to keep waste safe. Waste must be stored safely and securely and must not cause pollution to people or the environment.

The following information will help to summarise the Duty of Care regulations:

Secure and safe packaging

• The waste must be packaged in suitable containers so that it cannot fall out, blow away or escape from the receptacle.
• It must be secured against unauthorised removal as far as is reasonably practical.
• Security should be sufficient to prevent the breaking open of containers and removal of waste by vandals, thieves, animals, accident or weather.

Licensed waste collection

Businesses must ensure that the organisation collecting their waste is fully licensed by the Environment Agency. They will be authorised to remove waste and transport and dispose of it safely.

Waste transfer note

• The business must provide a written description of the waste to the person who removes it. This is known as a waste transfer note and must be completed by both persons involved in the transfer.

Our commercial waste collection service

Haringey Council can provide a full range of waste collection and disposal services through our nominated waste contractor Haringey Accord.  Services include:

• Refuse collections, using a range of containers to suit the needs of individual businesses. We can issue sacks where bin storage may be a problem.
• Clinical waste disposal
• Compactors for those companies with large amounts of waste.
• Removal of one-off loads or items. Please see special trade collections

What about recycling?

The Commercial Waste staff work closely with the Recycling Team. We can look at your waste stream and advise on recycling opportunities.

What will you collect?

There are some types of waste which require special treatment, for example asbestos and some chemicals.  If you wish to dispose of these items or you have any questions about items you wish to dispose of, please contact us for further information.
