Disposing of Household Waste
All householders have a legal responsibility to ensure that all of their rubbish and waste is disposed of properly. Please use these links to find out more:
For information about your regular bin collection service, please visit the household refuse collection page.
Registered waste carriers
The Environmental Protection (Duty of Care) Regulations 1991 (as amended), require all householders to make sure their waste is only removed from their premises by registered waste carriers. Householders not taking reasonable measures to do so could face fines of up to £5000.
Household waste in Haringey is collected by Veolia, which is a registered waste carrier. If you use a waste carrier other than Veolia to remove additional or bulky household, garden or construction waste you can check they are registered by calling the Environment Agency on 08708 506 506 and requesting an instant waste carrier validation check. You can visit the Environment Agency's online register through the external links section below.
If you want to use a waste carrier other than Veolia, check whether the contractor you are using caters for all building and allied trades, house clearances, retail establishments and scrap metal dealers.
Always ask for their waste carrier number and if in doubt check their details with the Environment Agency. If they don’t have a license then don’t use them!
Please be aware that bogus refuse collectors have been known to work in the area, knocking on doors claiming to be employees of the council or its contractor. Veolia staff are not permitted to directly approach residents to arrange for the removal of waste in this way. Residents approached in this way should decline any request for removal of waste and report the matter to the Veolia Haringey Contact Centre:
Tel: 020 8885 7700
Email: enquiries.haringey@veolia.co.uk
Rubbish in front gardens
Front gardens should not be used for storing bulky rubbish.
Rubbish in front gardens:
- is an eyesore that ruins the amenity of the local area
- can lead to pest infestations. Storage of bulky items can provide shelter for pests such as rats and mice
- can be a safety hazard to persons visiting the property.
The Environmental Protection Act enables the Council to require occupiers and landowners to remove waste that has been deposited illegally. The Council can also take steps under the Town and Country Planning Act to require land to be cleared up if its condition has a negative effect on the amenity of the local area.
If you would like to report a property with rubbish in its front garden please contact our Street Enforcement service:
