Japanese Knotweed

Close-up picture of Japanese Knotweed leavesJapanese Knotweed is an aggressive weed that can cause structural damage to buildings and paths, as well as ruining gardens.

It is important that Japanese Knotweed is disposed of correctly, as it can grow rapidly from very small lengths of root:

  • Japanese Knotweed should never be put into garden waste sacks.
  • Japanese Knotweed should not be put into your wheelie bin.

Disposal Service

Residents who have cleared away some Japanese Knotweed should carefully follow this procedure:

  1. To avoid contaminating other parts of your property, put the plant material into black plastic sacks in the part of your garden where you have cleared it. Do not carry it across your garden or into your home.
  2. Use at least two sacks so that the material is well contained, and do not put any sharp objects or twigs into the bags which may cause it to split.
  3. Keep the sacks separate from any other rubbish.
  4. Contact the Veolia Haringey Contact Centre on 020 8885 7700 to book a special collection. This will be done by a different vehicle, and the bags will be put straight into the furnaces at the local energy-from-waste facility to ensure that the Japanese Knotweed does not contaminate any other rubbish.
  5. Make sure you follow the instructions given by Veolia about when your special collection will take place, and where to put the sacks.

There is no charge for the special collection.

Controlling Japanese Knotweed

In order to fully eradicate Japanese Knotweed from your garden, you may need to employ a specialist company and the process can take some time. You may therefore choose just to try to control it by regularly cutting it back.
