Energy and Water

By employing simple low-cost (or no-cost) measures your school can reduce energy bills by up to 20% and reduce emissions of carbon dioxide at the same time. Schools in Haringey spend over £1million on energy each year which is typically three times as much as is spent on books.
There are a range of benefits that schools can gain by focusing on efficient energy and water management.
- Reduced costs - saving both utility and maintenance costs releases more funds for other school activities and projects.
- Improved internal environments - energy efficiency improves working conditions and comfort levels for staff and students.
- Reduced carbon footprint - raising awareness of environmental issues encourages behavioural change and greater participation by all school users in tackling climate change.
- Curriculum links - engaging pupils in energy saving is an excellent opportunity to translate global concerns into local action with improved understanding of citizenship and environmental issues.
- Accreditation - energy and water management is a key part of the Eco-Schools scheme

Schools Sustainable Investment Fund
Haringey Council is committed to helping schools become more energy efficient, and to help with this the Energy and Sustainability Team has recently launched the Schools Sustainable Investment Fund (SSIF). This fund is available to all schools to fit environmentally friendly design options within the school building. It is an interest-free loan fund which is repaid through the revenue savings achieved through the design options chosen such as installing thermostatic radiator valves or loft insulation.
