Building and Grounds
The design and management of the school estate affects its environmental performance and its ability to help pupils learn sustainable living. A well designed and cared for school provides an excellent teaching and learning resource for staff and pupils. Sustainable design principles, sustainable technologies, sustainable interior furnishings and sustainable environmental management provide working examples of sustainable living, benefiting pupils’ well-being and behaviour.

Growing Schools Campaign
The national Growing Schools Campaign helps to support teachers in using the 'outdoor classroom' as a resource across the curriculum for pupils of all ages. For more information please visit the Growing Schools website - see external links below. There are also links to a number of other useful growing resources below.
Enhancing your school grounds does not need to be expensive. Here are some top tips for making some simple but long-lasting changes to your grounds:
- If space is limited, try to encourage wildlife by making bird or bat boxes. Alternatively, develop a growing space by putting up hanging baskets and reusing old containers as plant pots.
- To encourage wildlife (such as grasshoppers and wild flowers) leave uncut areas around playing fields, plant a boundary hedge, install a pond or why not think about a green roof or wall.
- Developing raised beds allows access for everyone, although traditional plots are still popular.
- Set up a lunchtime gardening club for pupils, and get parents involved as well.
